HISTORY AND CULTURE IN THE PO VALLEY

Day One

Tour of the historical center of Saluzzo, a lovely Piedmontese town at the foot of the Po Valley. Stroll through the narrow alleys that lead up towards the castle amid charming old houses, noble dwellings, monuments and gardens with panoramic views of unusual beauty, making a stop at the Cathedral.

Tour of Casa Cavassa, splendid example of a noble Renaissance home which houses many works of art. Afterwards, a walk through the Medieval streets, stopping at the Church of Saint John, fine example of Gothic art and of the refined culture of its era.

Lunch in the area.

Tour of Staffarda Abbey, one of the most impressive monuments in Piedmont.  Built by Cistercian monks on land donated by the first Marquis of Saluzzo. Part of the material with which it was constructed came from the nearby mountain Monviso (Ophiolitic stone).

Afterwards, a visit to a local agricultural enterprise; opportunity for tasting and purchasing local products.

Characteristic dinner and overnight stay.

Day Two

In the morning, tour of Manta Castle, a late-Gothic jewel, with extremely well-preserved frescoes,  among the most lovely of European Gothic courts.

Lunch nearby.

Visit to a local wine cellar with wine tasting in combination with sampling of local food.

Characteristic dinner.

Evening of Occitan dancing.

Overnight stay.

Day Three

After breakfast departure for Crissolo; 20-minute walk to reach the Sanctuary of San Chiaffredo, in Gothic style, dedicated to the saint reputed to have evangelized the valley. Beautiful panoramic view of Monviso and the Saluzzo plains.

Continue on to  Balma Boves, located at 652 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Bracco. This is an unusual farmhouse, very well preserved, and sheltered by an overhanging cliff.

Characteristic lunch in the area.

In the afternoon a visit to the town center of Revello and then on to the Nature Museum of the Po River, where you can admire the dioramas (life-size reconstructions of animals in their natural settings) representing the principal ecosystems found in the Park, from the Alpine meadow-lands to the hills, from the river to the plains.
